Leave Options for Emory Caregivers

Many employees require leave time to care for a loved one at some point. Below are various leave options offered at Emory to help support employees responsible for the care of a child or an aging or sick adult family member.

There are important things to consider when requesting leave and you may want to discuss them with your Human Resource representative and/or Employee Relations at (404) 727-7625.

Things to Consider

Sick Leave

Allows employees to use accrued paid time off to care for eligible family members.

Can also help cover some paid time off under FMLA or a Personal Leave if sick leave days are accrued.

Must have accrued time available.

Vacation Leave

Allows employees to use accrued paid time off to care for family employees.

Must have accrued time available.

Family Medical Leave (FMLA)

Allows eligible employees up to 12 workweeks of unpaid, job-protected leave in a rolling 12-month period for specified family reasons.

Can be used intermittently.

May use in conjunction with accrued sick and vacation leave to help cover any financial burden of being out of work.

Employees should be certain to read FMLA policy clearly for details pertaining to benefits, retirement and disability. Questions should be referred to Employee Relations.

 

Personal Leave

Allows an employee unpaid leave time to care for an eligible family member (see policy) when he/she is either ineligible for FMLA or has exhausted FMLA.

Employees may use accrued sick time in conjunction with Personal Leave to help cover any financial of being out of work.

Personal Leave is not job-protected time off.

Employees should be certain to read the university's Personal Leave policy clearly for details pertaining to benefits, retirement and disability as well as the Courtesy Scholarship. Questions should be referred to Employee Relations.

Bereavement Leave

Allows an employee to take paid time off to attend a funeral or comparable service, related travel time and/or time necessary to conduct arrangements or other necessary duties (see policy).

This time is not accrued.

Length of paid time off can be up to 5 days per occurrence depending circumstances discussed with supervisor (see policy).
