Flexible Work Arrangements for Employee Parents

Flexible work arrangements are the most frequently requested support made by working parents. There are different types of flexible work arrangements (FWA). All employees are eligible for a FWO, however not all jobs are conducive for all forms of FWA's. There are pros and cons associated with each arrangement; therefore, it is important to evaluate the cost and benefit of each option.

Flexible Scheduling

Workday start and end times differ from the established standard (8 AM - 5 PM), yet the same number of hours-per-day is maintained

An employee is able to transport their child to and from school or extra-curricular activities.

Compressed Workweek

Enables employees to work longer days in exchange for shorter days or day off during that week or pay period

4-day, 10 hour workweek (4-10)

*Non-exempt employees working over a 40 hour workweek results in overtime.

An employee is able to spend longer periods of time with their child or perhaps shares custody with another parent nearby.


Working from a remote location one or more days a week

An employee is able to be home when their child gets home from school but is still able to focus on the demands required of their job. This may allow an employee greater ability to manage both work and home responsibilities.

Shift Flexibility

Allows employees to work with co-workers to adjust their schedules

Employee's ability to swap shifts

Employee is able to drop a shift and a co-worker is able to pick one up.

An shift employee who is able to change their shift with another employee to help them meet the varying parenting responsibilities such as attending a parent-teacher conference, volunteering for something at their children's school or attending a child's sport event.

Reduced Hours

Working less than 30 hours per week

Reduce full-time employment to fit the employees' unique circumstances

Provides for gradual return from leave

Allows gradual entry into retirement

An employee requests a reduction in hours to help them meet the demands of their family or possibly helping a child recover from an illness or surgery.

An employee requests a gradual return to work after using FMLA following the birth of a child to allow for additional adjustment to new role of being a parent and to allow for additional bonding.

Job Sharing

Full-time position shared by two part-time employees

Alternating weeks (week on and week off)

Shared or overlapping workdays

An employee who has a job sharing partner and desires more time to meet the demands of being a parent.
