Flexible Work Hours

Flexible work hours, also called flextime or flexible scheduling, is the most commonly requested flexible work arrangement. Flexible work hours offer flexibility in the traditional start and finish times (8 AM - 5 PM), as well as meal breaks, which accommodate the needs of an employee.

Departmental benefits include increased coverage for positions involving customer interaction. For example, if there are three receptionists assigned to greet students, under a traditional work schedule, the business hours would be 8 AM to 5 PM. A flexible program could change business hours to 7 AM to 6 PM, which provides a direct benefit to the students.

The Emory WorkLife Resource Center can assist managers in the design, implementation, and measurement of these types of programs.

Sample Arrangement

Employees can elect to start their workday between 7 AM and 9 AM and finish between 4 PM and 6 PM. All employees are required to work eight hours of paid time and be onsite between the core hours of 9 AM - 4 PM.
